Community Benefits

Header-About Us

Since its founding in 1859, The Queen’s Medical Center has strived “to fulfill the intent of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to provide in perpetuity quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawai’i.” Over these 150+ years, we have evolved with the times to continue serving and strengthening our community.
Community Health Needs Assessment Report
In fiscal year 2013, The Queen’s Medical Center, with the Health Care Association of Hawai‘i and its other member hospitals, partnered with Healthy Communities Institute to conduct a community health needs assessment to identify areas of health needs in the State of Hawai’i.
A framework for understanding community health needs was built using a holistic approach, taking into consideration extensive secondary data on the social, economic, and physical environments, as well as health risks and outcomes. Interviews with those with key knowledge of the community’s health needs, health disparities, and vulnerable populations provided vital information, as did a small set of community residents who provided additional insights on the health needs in the state.
The result of this work is the 2012-2013 State of Hawai’i Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The goal of the report is to offer an understanding of the health needs in the community, as well as to help guide our community benefit planning effort and the development of a strategy to address an area(s) of need.
We have identified diabetes as the priority health need to be addressed, with an overarching goal to promote and improve community health for the people of Hawai’i through diabetes prevention and management. To make an impact on any significant health need such as diabetes, we recognize that we are not able to do alone all that needs to be done. We will continue to work and build partnerships with others in the community, to help make a difference in the health of our community.
