Community Health Needs Assessment Report

Since its founding in 1859, The Queen’s Medical Center has strived “to fulfill the intent of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV to provide in perpetuity quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawaii.”  Over these 155+ years, we have evolved with the times to continue serving and strengthening our community.

In fiscal year 2016, the Healthcare Association of Hawai‘i, along with The Queen’s Medical Center and its other member hospitals, partnered with Healthy Communities Institute to conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) to identify areas of health needs in the State of Hawaii.  The report was developed through a collaborative process and provides an overview of the health needs in Hawaii.

The CHNA findings are drawn from an analysis of an extensive set of quantitative data and in-depth qualitative data from key community health leaders and experts that serve and represent vulnerable populations and/or populations with unmet health needs.

The goal of the report is to offer a meaningful understanding of the health needs across the state, as well as to help guide our community benefit planning effort and the development of a strategy to address an area(s) of need.

We have identified diabetes as the priority health need to be addressed, with an overarching goal to promote and improve community health for the people of Hawaii through diabetes prevention and management.  To make an impact on any significant health need such as diabetes, we recognize that we are not able to do alone all that needs to be done.  We will continue to work and build partnerships with others in the community, to help make a difference in the health of our community.
