What is the Pain and Spine Center?
The Queen’s Medical Center Pain and Spine Center offers a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan for managing pain. The interdisciplinary approach goes beyond medication management and interventional procedures to incorporate the entire scope of pain management, including behavioral services and rehabilitation services.

The program uses the expertise of internal medicine specialists, rheumatologists, neurologists, psychologists, physiatrists, acupuncturists, advanced practice nurses, spine surgeons, anesthesiologists, case managers and physical therapists all from the Queen’s Medical Center.

The Pain and Spine Program offers quick access and accepts most insurance plans.

Dr. Jeffrey Loh, Medical Director of Pain and Spine Center

Dr. Jeffrey Loh is a Board Certified, fellowship-trained Anesthesiologist and Pain Medicine Specialist. He offers a wide range of non-surgical and surgical interventions to treat various chronic pain conditions, with an expertise on neck and back-related conditions, nerve pain, and cancer pain. His practice focuses on the use of various medications, injections and surgical interventions to treat chronic pain, aiming to provide the patient with a comprehensive and cohesive treatment plan.

Dr. Loh received his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and completed his Anesthesia residency at the New York Presbyterian Hospital.  Following completion of his Anesthesia training, Dr. Loh matriculated to UCLA for further training in pain management and earned his Masters of Science in Clinical Research.  Following completion of his training, Dr. Loh worked in Los Angeles before returning to Hawai’i where he was born and raised.

Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga, Medical Director of Spine Surgery

Dr. Kyle Mitsunaga is a Board Certified, fellowship-trained adult and pediatric orthopedic spine surgeon, offering a wide range of non-surgical and surgical interventions to treat neck and back-related conditions. His expertise include various surgical interventions to treat the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, specializing in treating scoliosis, spinal deformities and degeneration, as well as spinal fractures and tumors.

Born and raised in Hawai’i, Dr. Mitsunaga earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Stanford University. He attended medical school at the University of Hawai’i, John A. Burns School of Medicine and received his post-graduate training in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, Davis. He completed two spine surgery fellowships at Stanford University Medical Center and at University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Roy K. Esaki, Staff Physician

Dr. Roy K. Esaki specializes in comprehensive acute and chronic pain management. His philosophy is to increase functionality and quality of life through a balance of non-opioid medications, procedures, physical therapy and self-directed lifestyle management. An Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine Department of Surgery, he has published a wide range of book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on pain management and anesthesiology.

Before moving back to Hawaii to raise his family, Dr. Esaki served on the faculty at Stanford University. He also worked as an attending anesthesiologist at the Veteran’s Administration Palo Alto Health Care system and at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
